Moran to Ft. Belvoir: Drop Dead
Fort Belvoir is currently home to 22,000 DoD workers. DoD realignment plans call for moving an additional 18,000 jobs to the base. You would think that with 40,000 workers Fort Belvoir would be a priority for Metro extension. Think again.
From the 5/21/2005 WAPO:
That's right, the wealthy and powerful landowners and businesses of Tysons Corner take priority over all others, even the folks who are working to defend our country. Local politicians are merely puppets and mouthpieces for this powerful special interest group.
If you support the men and women who are defending our country, if you work at Fort Belvoir or have a relative, friend or neighbor who does, if you live in Southeast Fairfax County and are concerned about the horrendous traffic problems that will be created by no Metro extension to Fort Belvoir, send a message to the wealthy and powerful Tysons Corner owners and developers by NOT shopping at Tysons Corner.
From the 5/21/2005 WAPO:
But county officials' case for federal dollars [to extend Metro to Fort Belvoir] is complicated by the fact that they are seeking federal funding for half of a $1.5 billion Metrorail extension through Tysons Corner, a line they'd ultimately like to get to Dulles International Airport.
Some leaders seemed less than optimistic about extending the line soon but said it was important to start planning now.
"Eventually it has to happen," Moran said. "But I think it could be many years down the pike. I would expect that after we complete rail to Dulles that that would be next on the agenda for Northern Virginia."
